burundi
Probably the least known among the Eos
Visions countries, Burundi offers one of the most authentic,
intimate and charming introductions to life and culture in
sub-Saharan Africa. After years of civil war, the country has
regained safety and stability, and captivates with its natural
beauty and the warmth, hospitality and esprit of francophone east
Africa.
Burundi’s most notable natural feature is undoubtedly the mystic
Lake Tanganyika with its long shoreline that is interspersed with
traditional fishing villages, endless palm oil plantations and
pretty beaches. What makes the lake so stunning, however, are the
sharply rising mountains that surround it on all sides. As part of
the 'Switzerland of Africa', Burundi, just like its northern
neighbors, boasts of countless green hills that provide for
permanent breathtaking views.
And Burundi is blessed because of its close proximity to two
world-class tourism attractions on its doorstep: gorilla trekking in
the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kahuzi Biega National Park, a safe
and stable part of the DR Congo, and chimpanzee trekking in Jane
Goodall’s original research location, Gombe Stream National Park in
Tanzania.
But even more exciting are the people. Naturally open, curious and
welcoming, they are keen to present their country in very authentic
ways. Our educational visits focus especially on a range of social
issues (e.g. processes of reconciliation and reconstruction,
gender-related activities, poverty in its wide facets) and modern
ways of income generation (e.g. production processes for palm oil,
pineapple wine, cheese, avocado oil, coffee or tea). We also explore
the rich history of the country with the intriguing stories of
Stanley and Livingstone, and Burton and Speke, as well as the royal
traditions and the colonial heritage. The highlight of every visit
to Burundi is one of the stunning performances of the Royal Drummers
on the hill of Gishora.
